PUBG Corp. ends lawsuit against Fortnite maker Epic Games
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds developer drops lawsuit against Epic Games for alleged copyright infringement in Fortnite. It is not known whether the parties have reached a settlement.
Bloomberg reports that PUBG Corp. dropped the lawsuit against Epic Games. This was announced on the website of a local court in South Korea. Information about the lawsuit came out at the end of May; a subpoena would have been issued as early as January.
PUBG Corp. has confirmed to Bloomberg that the case has been closed, but will not comment substantive. It is not known whether the parties have reached a settlement out of court.
While there were few details on the matter, it would be about whether Fortnite copied PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. PUBG Corp. felt that with the battle royale mode in Fortnite, Epic Games infringed intellectual property. Last year, the developer of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds already complained about Fortnite, although that criticism was later nuanced.
A striking detail is that both PUBG. Corp as Epic Games is partly owned by Chinese internet giant Tencent. Additionally, Epic was heavily involved in the development of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, as that game uses the Unreal Engine.
