Developer Psyonix has announced that his game Rocket League will be available for free download later this summer. Now the game costs 20 euros. The free version is also coming to the Epic Games Store, but will not appear on Steam. Epic Games took over Psyonix last year.

Rocket League is five years old, and the creators say in an announcement that they want to make the game even bigger by making it available for free. According to Psyonix, the game will remain the same as it is now, but menus will be adjusted to make the game easier to discover. Psyonix will also improve important features such as Tournaments and Challenges. In addition, the game will receive cross-platform progression. Players can play the game on various platforms and take their progress with them.

It has not yet been announced when the game will be available for free download and when the other innovations will be implemented. Psyonix says it will happen sometime this summer and will reveal more about it later. Once the game is free-to-play, it will also appear in the Epic Games Store. Rocket League will no longer be available to new players on Steam. Existing players can continue to use the Steam version and receive updates.

Players who played Rocket League online before the release of the free version will receive a number of rewards with Legacy status. Players will receive all previously released dlc and an Est. 20XX title, which indicates the year in which the player started the game.

Psyonix was acquired by Epic Games last year. The 130 employees of the studio all transferred to Epic. The purchase amount has not been disclosed.
