Psychonauts 2 achieves crowdfunding goal
Developer Double Fine Productions has raised 3.3 million dollars through crowdfunding site Fig and thus the intended goal has been achieved. The studio can therefore start production on Psychonauts 2. The studio hopes to be ready in the fall of 2018.
Tim Schafer, founder of both Double Fine and the all-games-focused Fig, announced via a video that they succeeded in raising the targeted $3.3 million. That means that the game will be made and Double Fine will start production. The studio hopes to release the game in the fall of 2018. The game will be released for Windows, Linux, OS X, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Psychonauts 2 is the sequel to the 2005 Psychonauts, which was also made by Double Fine. It was released for Windows, the PlayStation 2, and the original Xbox. In 2011, Double Fine regained the rights to the game, allowing it to not only release a version for Linux and OS X, but also start working on a concept for a sequel.
In Psychonauts 2, the player is once again Raz, a little man who has psychological powers and roams around in a colorful game world full of dangers and puzzles. Some of the original voice actors have already agreed to participate. Richard Horvitz will again provide the voice of Raz and Nicki Rap the voice of Lili. Jack Black has also pledged his cooperation. As with the original, the game’s story is written by Eric Wolpaw. He is now employed by Valve, where he contributed to the dialogues from both Portal games, but his employer allows him to make a trip.
Double Fine does not have enough of the 3.3 million dollars and will also put some of its own money into the project. In addition, an external investor is involved in the project. Anyone who wants to can still support the project; the collection is still ongoing. Amounts between $10 and $10,000 are welcome. For $10 your name will appear on the credits of Psychonauts 2 and you will receive a digital copy of the predecessor. Those who donate $10,000 will camp with a friend and part of the Double Fine team at the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, the fictional camp in which the first part is set.
