The beta version of the upcoming PS4 firmware numbered 5.50 has been released and introduces system wide supersampling for the PlayStation 4 Pro, which can display 4k resolution. This should provide a better image on 1080p screens, among other things.

Resetera forum users share screenshots of the new feature present in the beta. The message shown in English refers to “Supersampling Mode” and reads: “Supersampling Mode may improve the picture quality of certain games on a TV with 2k resolution or lower. Results are game dependent. In some games, the quality does not improve or the frame rate changes.”

Below that is an option to turn the option on and off. Supersampling works by rendering an image at a higher resolution and then downscaling it to a lower resolution, making, for example, lines appear less angular. A forum user shared a list of games that could take advantage of the new feature. These include Dishonored 2, No Man’s Sky and The Last Guardian.
