ProtonVPN will use WireGuard protocol by default

Proton will now use WireGuard as standard in its VPN service ProtonVPN. From now on, the protocol will be the default option. That should provide faster connections and better battery life for devices, the developers say.

The change will affect all ProtonVPN users, the developers say. This is done via a feature called Smart Protocol. It was introduced last year and ensures that users are automatically switched to the best VPN protocol if they are on a network that, for example, blocks certain protocols. That doesn’t happen very often, but only if users are on a network that actively blocks VPN protocols like corporate networks. In practice, most users will stay on WireGuard a lot if it becomes the default. Smart Protocol will choose WireGuard as the default protocol in the future.

According to the developers, WireGuard has several advantages, mainly in the efficiency. This makes it faster and takes less resources on the device it runs on. This ensures that ProtonVPN can provide faster connections and the device has a longer battery life. In addition, Proton says it is important to support open source standards.
