ProtonMail releases beta of encrypted file storage service ProtonDrive
ProtonMail has started an early beta of its encrypted file storage service ProtonDrive. Paying users of ProtonMail and the company’s VPN service can get early access to the storage service.
ProtonMail has sent an email to users in which the offer is made. Users who upgrade to a bundle with ProtonMail and ProtonVPN Plus can get free early access from ProtonDrive there. For this, users must take at least a two-year subscription. They get a 47 percent discount on that.
The company says the service is only available in the form of early access, but gives no warning that it may not work properly or that parts may or may not be missing. For example, according to users on Reddit, it is not yet possible to share files with other users.
ProtonMail announced in late August that it would come with a file storage service. In it, files are encrypted with end-to-end encryption. It is not clear how much space users are given to store files. That is not stated in the newsletter, but also not in the dashboard when users upgrade. With a Plus subscription, the cheapest paid package, users get 5GB of storage space.
The encrypted mail service has released more services in recent years that are specifically aimed at privacy and security. Earlier, for example, there was also a calendar app out, but it is still in beta mode.
