Proton releases Drive cloud service for iOS and Android

Proton is releasing a Drive app for its cloud service on iOS and Android via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Users can upload, download and share files through the app, protected by end-to-end encryption.

The cloud service’s smartphone app is similar to many of its competitors; users can create folders and upload various files to the cloud. Proton Drive also includes a sharing system. In addition, all files are encrypted with end-to-end encryption, so that no one, not even Proton, could access the files.

Proton Drive is available for free to anyone with a Proton email account, with a maximum cloud storage of 1GB. When purchasing a Proton Unlimited subscription, customers receive 500GB of cloud storage space and fifteen e-mail addresses, among other things. This subscription costs 12 euros per month, 10 euros per month on an annual basis or 8 euros per month with a subscription term of two years.

After the general release of the service accessible through browsers, the affected iOS and Android apps are the first native applications of Proton Drive. The smartphone apps have been available as a beta version for a relatively small group of users since August. It Swiss company works also to a Drive application for Windows and macOS.

Proton started out as an e-mail provider, but has expanded its services in recent years to include a digital calendar, a VPN service and, since this fall, a cloud service.
