Proton makes password manager Proton Pass available to all users

Proton has taken its password manager Proton Pass out of closed beta and made it available to all users. The Password Vault is available for iOS and Android and as a browser extension for desktops. There is both a free and paid version.

Proton Pass generates passwords and then stores them in a ‘password vault’ so users don’t have to remember them. The tool can also do this with usernames, Time-based One-Time Passwords and notes. It can also store Aliases. This allows users to use an alternate email address to hide their original address. If a website is hacked, only the email alias will be exposed.

The entire vault and all stored data are encrypted with end-to-end encryption, instead of just the passwords as is the case with some other password managers. This is according to Proton important to prevent ‘apparently innocent pieces of information’, such as stored URLs, from being used by malicious parties to compile a detailed profile of the user.

In any case, the browser extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave. Users of the free version are allowed to create a maximum of ten email aliases and three 2fa logins. The paid version has no limits in this area and also provides access to multiple password vaults. This version of Proton Pass is available as part of Proton Unlimited, Business, Visionary and Family. Alternatively, there is also a separate Proton Pass Plus subscription for five euros per month.
