Proton has 100 million account registrations
Online service provider Proton, known for e-mail, web storage and VPN, has reached the milestone of 100 million account registrations. This has been announced by the Swiss company. It is unknown how many of those accounts are still active.
It took Proton nine years to reach the milestone of 100 million accounts, reports the company. Peaks were, among other things, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year and during the protests in Iran last year, as a result of which the number of users for the VPN service suddenly increased sharply. The company concludes that it has become a popular service in places in the world where freedom has been threatened.
Proton started with the mail service through a crowdfunding campaignraising half a million dollars from ten thousand backers for an encrypted mail service, but has since expanded its services to include a calendar service, VPN service and web storage.
