Production of Raspberry Pi Zero has resumed
The Raspberry Pi foundation has put the Pi Zero back into production after it was temporarily shut down due to the introduction of the Pi 3. One million units of that development board have now been made. The foundation now wants to make 50,000 copies of the Pi Zero per month.
On the Raspbery Pi forum, the organization announces that a change has been made to the design of the Pi Zero. The development board gets a new function, but what that is has not been announced. It’s not about WiFi and it’s a feature that was in high demand, a moderator on the forum wrote.
Introduced in November 2015, the Raspberry Pi Zero is a stripped-down version of the original Pi from 2012. The board is a lot smaller and cheaper with a suggested retail price of just $5. The Pi Zero has never been for sale for such a low price in the Benelux. The first copies of the sign were given away at the official Raspberry Pi magazine and at the introduction the foundation already announced that the demand would exceed the available supply. As a result, prices remained relatively high.
In the past period, the sign was virtually unavailable. In order to produce enough Raspberry Pi 3 boards, the foundation had temporarily stopped making the Zero. Now that production has resumed, the stock will be replenished with 250,000 Zero plates. The foundation’s goal is to produce at least 50,000 copies per month for the rest of the year.
