Elon Musk has warned that the upgrade for fully self-driving Tesla cars will become steadily more expensive starting May 1. Ultimately, about $3,000 will be added to the price, which is currently at $5,000.

Musk makes that known via Twitter, but he does not mention a concrete price. Another user asks if $3,000 is a good indication of the increase, to which Musk answers: “something like that, yes”. Here the upgrade costs 5300 euros, which brings the increase converted in euros to 3180 euros, although it remains to be seen how quickly the price rises in the Benelux and how much will be added on top. Anyone who does not purchase the upgrade for fully self-driving control when purchasing the car will pay 7400 euros afterwards.

Musk does not say what will happen to that price from May 1. Earlier this month, it was also announced that the Tesla Model 3, the automaker’s cheapest model to date, comes standard with Autopilot, which is a level below full self-driving and already makes the car several thousand dollars more expensive. On the other hand, Tesla has promised that existing cars with the fully self-driving control upgrade will be equipped with new hardware in the coming months.

This so-called Full Self-Driving Computer, formerly Autopilot Hardware 3.0, would become much more powerful and significantly expand the possibilities for autonomous driving.
