President of the European Council warns against the power of large technology companies
Donald Tusk warns against the power of big tech companies. During a speech in Warsaw, the president of the European Council warned that companies have almost as much power as China.
Tusk expressed his concerns during Poland’s Constitution Day in the capital, Reuters reports. He compares the power of technology companies such as Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google with the power of countries such as China.
“In the East, we are seeing the emergence of those who can influence people’s behavior,” he says, pointing to China. “In the west, we are now seeing the emergence of an uncontrolled, spontaneous empire.” Tusk also said that young people are increasingly dependent on the Internet and that this will only increase in the future.
The European Union has been trying for some time to better protect citizens against the power of large technology companies. The GDPR privacy law is a well-known example of this.
