President Donald Trump partially suspends trade ban with Huawei

US President Donald Trump has said US companies may again sell technology to Huawei when it comes to materials that do not involve national security considerations.

President Trump made the statements at a press conference at the G20 summit in Japan on Saturday. This after a conversation the US head of state had with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the same summit. That writes, among others, Bloomberg.

Details about this move have not yet been disclosed. Officially, Huawei is still on the entity list along with 70 related companies. It is not clear whether only Huawei or all these companies will be cut, nor which hardware and software exactly fall under the heading ‘sensitive to US national security’. Nor was there any discussion of trade in the other direction: purchasing goods and services from companies on the list.

The trade ban for Huawei and the 70 companies has been in effect since mid-May, so about six weeks. In the meantime, it appears that the Chinese tech giant was taking into account a drop in sales of 40 to 60 million smartphones. In addition, the company was forced to add gas to market its alternative to Android. Huawei may still continue with those developments despite the suspension of the trade ban, as it has now been demonstrated how many problems such a ban can cause a Chinese company.
