Portal coming to Nvidia’s Android console Shield
Portal comes to Nvidia Shield, the Android handheld from the American video card developer. It is still unclear whether this means that more games based on the Source Engine will make the switch to the Shield or other Android devices.
It would be a port of Portal by Nvidia itself with approval from Valve, which makes it unlikely that the game will be widely available for the Android platform. There is a good chance that Nvidia Portal will bring its Tegra chips to other devices.
Nvidia’s Jason Paul, head of the GeForce Gaming division, announced the partnership with Valve. Portal is added to the Shield’s game library, which now has about 300 games. At the same time, Paul is announcing extensions to the Shield’s streaming functionality. For example, there is now the possibility to turn on a PC with the portable console with wake-on-lan and log in to it. Additionally, Shield support is being added to the GTX 800M, 700M, and 600M notebook graphics cards. Finally, the Shield will receive an update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat and support for Bluetooth mice and keyboards.
The Nvidia Shield was released in the US and Canada in July of 2013. Reviewers praised the handheld console’s performance, but less so about the price and range of games. Nvidia has hardly revealed anything about a release outside the US and Canada, but that will happen, Jen-Hsun Huang, director of Nvidia told Gizmodo.
