Sports car manufacturer Porsche will collaborate with Boeing on so-called urban air mobility vehicles, including an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect.

As part of the announced partnership, Porsche and Boeing will establish an international team that will focus on various aspects of urban air mobility. Among other things, the team will conduct a market analysis into the potential of ‘premium vehicles’ and into possible use cases.

Boeing, Porsche and Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences are also developing a concept for an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, or possibly. This should result in a prototype that can be used for test flights.

“Porsche wants to broaden its horizons and grow from a sports car manufacturer into a leading brand for premium mobility,” said Detlev von Platen, sales director at Porsche. Porsche is not the only car brand that is looking for new mobility concepts. Competitor Daimler, for example, invested heavily in the German Volocopter. That company is working on the VoloCity air taxi, an event that it aims to commercialize within three years.

Boeing is not only collaborating with Porsche in the field of urban air mobility. The aircraft manufacturer is also developing its own electric air taxi, which has since been used to perform a successful autonomous test flight.
