Announcement in the apps
Yesterday there was an update of the apps and the release notes contained something like: ‘This update contains an important announcement regarding Pixelmator/Photomator’. If you open the apps after updating, you will immediately see what they mean: the apps – from the same developer – are now part of Apple. The announcement is followed by a link to Apple’s Privacy Policy.
The acquisition is not a surprise: it was already announced in November that Pixelmator and Photomator would be taken over by Apple. Then it was still waiting for an agreement from the supervisors.
What are Pixelmator and Photomator?
Pixelmator, a cheaper alternative to Photoshop especially for Apple users, has grown over the years into powerful and user-friendly software. With functions such as color adjustments, low -processing, filters and digital illustrations. On the Mac there is Pixelmator Pro, while iPhone and iPad users have a lighter version. In addition, there is a photomator, a similar app but then specifically focused on photo editing.
For now we do not yet know what the acquisition will mean in concrete terms; The announcement in the apps is undoubtedly only the beginning. For example, it is still unclear whether Apple will change something about the pricing of the apps. Whether the apps might include in a future iOS update. It is certainly not the first time that Apple has taken over apps and what they do with them is quite different. The app assignments automatically appeared on your iPhone after an iOS update, Apple Music Classical (based on Primephonic) you had to download yourself.
