Niantic CEO John Hanke announced during the Apple event Wednesday evening that Pokémon Go is coming to the Apple Watch. On the smartwatch, players can spin pokestops and see which Pokémon are nearby.

To actually catch Pokémon, the iPhone must be used. However, the smartwatch does show information, for example about eggs that are being hatched. The screen shows the distance the player still has to travel and also shows which Pokémon will come out of the egg, when the required distance has been covered.

From the moment users launch Pokémon Go on the Apple Watch, the app also records the calories burned during the walk. According to John Hanke, Pokémon Go has been downloaded more than 500 million times and all players have walked 4.6 billion kilometers together. The watchOS app should be available before the end of this year. An exact date is not yet known.
