Plextor announces msata SSD M6M series for laptops
Plextor has released new solid state drives in the M6M series that are equipped with an msata connection. The M6M SSDs are available in storage capacities from 128GB to 512GB and would achieve up to 14k more iops with random reads than their predecessors.
The M6M solid state drives are equipped with a Marvell 88SS9188 processor, according to Plextor a “server-class” controller chip. The flash memory comes from Toshiba, while Plextor itself has developed the firmware used. Among other things, the firmware would be able to protect data with True Protect data protection algorithms and 256-bit AES encryption.
According to Plextor, the M6M SSDs achieve sequential read and write speeds of 520MB/s and 440MB/s respectively. The number of iops would have increased by 14k from the previous batch to 96kiops in random reads. On random writes, Plextor specifies 80kiops.
The compact dimensions of the M6M and the msata connections, together with a consumption of only 2mW in sleep mode and a resume time of 100ms, should make the SSD especially interesting for very thin notebooks and tablets. The M6M models will be available from the second quarter with storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. Prices have not yet been announced.
