Plex stops support for plugins and makes adding subtitles easier
Plex will stop supporting plugins. For the time being it is still possible to install plug-ins manually, but the Plugin Directory will disappear from the software. Adding subtitles will soon be easier directly from the software.
According to the makers of Plex, the software uses all kinds of cleverness to find subtitles in the right language for the chosen video. The functionality will be available as Plex Pass Preview in the coming days, on all platforms except iOS and Apple TV. On Apple’s platforms, the subtitles feature comes a little later. Plex does not say in the announcement where the subtitles come from, but a screenshot shows that at least the search is via OpenSubtitles.
Plex also announces that it will stop supporting plugins. According to the makers, these are used by less than 2 percent of users. The protocol in Plex for plugins is outdated according to the team and therefore difficult to support. The software makers argue that standalone apps like Tautulli work better.
Also, the Watch Later feature will disappear from Plex, as will Cloud Sync. Both functions would hardly be used. Earlier in September, Plex announced it would discontinue its paid Cloud service due to ongoing technical issues. The Plex Cloud servers will go offline on November 30.
