Plex stops Cloud service after two years due to technical problems
Plex is pulling the plug on its Plex Cloud service on November 30. The company reports that it cannot cope with the technical problems that plague the service announced two years ago at a reasonable cost.
As of November 30, users will no longer be able to access their Plex Cloud server. Plex recommends that users download their files from the online storage they used for Plex Cloud, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive, and put them on local storage, where they can install Plex Media Server.
The reason for stopping the service is due to technical problems that have been going on for ages. Especially the link with third-party storage services was difficult, so that support for Amazon Drive was already discontinued during the beta. “We’ve been working to resolve the various issues while keeping costs under control,” the developers said. After research, they have come to the conclusion that there is no solution that can be realized at a reasonable cost. Due to the problems, it has not been possible to set up new Plex Cloud servers since February.
Plex announced Plex Cloud in September 2016 and then started a test phase. In March 2017, the development team officially introduced the service. To use the service, customers had to purchase a Plex Pass for EUR 4.99 monthly, EUR 39.99 annually or for an unlimited period of time for EUR 119.99.
