Plex is testing Apple TV integration for its streaming service’s free content

Plex is testing the Apple TV app integration. This integration allows Plex users to find content through the Apple TV app. This only applies to the free-to-watch TV shows and movies from Plex’s own streaming service.

On Reddit, a Plex employee clarifies that the integration of the Apple TV app on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV media players only works with the free on-demand movies and TV shows. He likes to emphasize that users’ personal media are also part of the feature, but according to him this is technically not possible.

He points out that for the integration, a list of content must be supplied to Apple. According to the employee, according to its own privacy policy, Plex does not know what its users have in their personal media libraries. That would be one reason why the integration of personal content is not an issue.

The integration of the Apple TV app revolves around a specific function of this app, namely that it can also serve as a kind of hub for content from other services. For example, users can access and launch Amazon Prime Video content via the Apple TV app, without having to open the Prime Video app first. Disney+ also supports this, but Netflix for example does not yet.

The beta test of the Apple TV app integration was released as first discovered by some MacRumors readers. The integration requires at least version 7.14 of Plex. At the moment there is no clarity about when the test period will be over and when the integration will be finalized. On the Plex forum, another employee says that the integration only works in the US for now.

Plex is best known as a media player, but since last year the service also offers its own streaming service, where users can watch movies and TV shows at no extra cost. This service works with advertisements.
