Plex Introduces Music Player PlexAmp For Desktop And Mobile
Plex has introduced two new applications: PlexAmp and Plex Dash. With PlexAmp, Plex is essentially reintroducing a music player previously announced under that name, but with more features and now also for mobile. PlexPass is now required.
Plex claims to have spent two years working on version 3 of PlexAmp. That music player has been introduced by the company in the past for Windows, macOS, and Linux as part of its Plex Labs “testing ground,” but the new version is built on React Native instead of React. Versions for Android, iOS, macOS, Windows and Linux have now been developed with a single codebase. However, a PlexPass subscription is now required. This costs 5 euros per month or 40 euros per year.
The base of the player is the Treble engine and PlexAmp uses the Opus codec. The application offers gapless rendering, fading options and pre-caching, among other things. There is also support for effect plug-ins for spoken audio, such as boosting voices and compression on silences. There are also functions such as Mix Builder for creating playlists around bands, for example, and you can download not only albums but entire radio stations.
In addition to PlexAmp, there is the Plex Dash mobile app. This app for Android and iOS is a management tool that shows what a Plex Media Server is doing with maps of the views, real-time statistics and a live server log viewer. This app also requires a PlexPass subscription.
