PlayStation 5 has been delivered 19.3 million times, availability may increase
Sony shipped 2 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the past quarter. This brings the total to 19.3 million units since its release. In the fiscal year running from April 2022 to March 2023, Sony expects to ship an additional 18 million PlayStation 5 consoles.
In the past financial year Sony delivered 11.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles. Initially, the company had estimated that it could deliver 14.8 million, but the console maker had indicated several times during the year that this would no longer be feasible due to chip shortages.
Sony expects to ship 18 million PS5 consoles in the fiscal year that started in April. That would be a significant increase from the previous fiscal year, but it is less than what Sony had previously indicated. In May last year thought Sony could still break its own records by delivering a minimum of 22.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the fiscal year to March 2023.
Deliveries are lagging behind expectations due to ongoing chip shortages. The demand for PlayStation 5 consoles still exceeds the supply. More than a year and a half after the introduction of the console, the PS5 is rarely in stock at stores or web shops. There may be improvements in the coming months. In any case, Sony’s expectations indicate that more consoles will be produced.
Games, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Plus
Sony delivered 70.5 million games in the past quarter. Of that, 14.5 million came from its own PlayStation Studios. The percentage of digital games was 71 percent. The rest are physical discs. 100,000 PS4 consoles were also delivered. Over the entire financial year, this amounts to one million units and since its release in 2014, it has been 117.2 million units.
At the end of the quarter, there were 47.4 million PlayStation Plus subscribers. That is 0.6 million less than in the previous quarter. The number of monthly active PlayStation Network users fell by 5 million to 106 million.
