PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 can boot all existing games
The developer of PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 announces that the software is now able to boot all known games and apps for the platform. That doesn’t mean that all games are playable; that percentage currently stands at 63.5 percent.
It is the first time that there are no more games and applications in the Nothing category on the compatibility list, writes RPCS3 on Twitter. That category was reserved for software that did nothing at all when it was attempted to run in the emulator. The team also says it wants to get rid of the Loading category. It currently contains six titles. They start up, but don’t get past the loading screen.
The milestone does not mean that all or nearly all PlayStation 3 games are now playable via the emulator on a PC. There are still 186 titles in the Intro category, which means that they do not get past the loading of the intro of the game. Furthermore, there are 987 titles on the list where it is possible to get into the game, but which do not receive the predicate playable.
There are now 2054 titles in the Playable category. That is 63.5% of the total. To qualify for this category, games must be able to be completed with ‘playable achievements’, without ‘game-breaking’ bugs or glitches.
RPCS3 is an open source emulator for Sony’s PlayStation 3, which runs on Windows, Linux and BSD. The emulator has been in development since 2011 and is still actively maintained. Among other things, the team has long-term plans to enable game boot from original PS3 discs and to support microphones, cameras and USB accessories.
