Photos presumably show DJI Mavic Air 2

Photos of an unannounced DJI drone have surfaced online. It appears to be the Mavic Air 2. The new foldable drone gets more sensors and a modified design, which is more like the Mavic 2 series.

The photos have been posted on Twitter by a Chinese drone pilot. DroneDJ website discusses the images and states that it concerns the DJI Mavic Air 2. The appearance of the new Air is more in line with that of the drones in the Mavic 2 series, in terms of color, design and use of materials. The new model also seems to get the quiet propellers of the Mavic 2 series.

On the underside and back are sensors that point to a 360-degree system to recognize and avoid obstacles. The current Mavic Air doesn’t have that, but the Mavic 2 models do. The small camera module indicates a small sensor, presumably of the 1/2.33″ size. The more expensive Mavic 2 Pro has a much larger 1″ sensor.

The DJI Mavic Air 2 will probably be equipped with ADS-B support. This is a system for communication with manned air vehicles and DJI is thus ahead of future legislation. DJI announced last year that all drones weighing more than 250 grams will receive the functionality. The ADS-B system sends an alert to the user if there is another air vehicle in the vicinity.

The photos also show a controller to which a smartphone can be attached to the top. With the controller of the current DJI Mavic Air, the phone must be attached to the bottom. The new controller also seems to be bigger.

It is not clear when DJI will announce its new drone. The Mavic Air came out two years ago and was marketed as an easy-to-use model that took over many functions from the more expensive Mavic Pro. The Mavic Air currently costs about eight hundred euros.
