Photo share website SmugMug has announced that the company has acquired the similar website Flickr. Despite the acquisition, the two websites will continue to operate independently for the time being.

With the acquisition, Flickr is no longer part of Oath, which is also the parent company of Yahoo. The acquisition was shared by both Flickr and SmugMug on their own news pages. Flickr has also posted a on his website in which the company explains the consequences of the acquisition.
In the faq Flickr indicates that there are currently no plans for the services of Flickr and SmugMug to merge and that Flickr will for the time being remain a separate website with its own url and account file. With the acquisition SmugMug mainly wants to make the development of the two platforms more efficient through cooperation between the websites. If things change on the websites, Flickr promises to be as transparent as possible about this.
As part of the acquisition, users are asked to accept or reject the SmugMug user agreement before 25 May. When the user does nothing, the Flickr account is automatically migrated from the Yahoo conditions to that of SmugMug.
Flickr was established in 2004 as a platform for photographers to post their work so that it can be shown on blogs and social media. It was owned by Oath and part of the Yahoo department. SmugMug was founded in 2002 and offers similar functionality as Flickr.
