Photo shows possible arrival of Facebook Messenger for OS X

There seems to be a version of Facebook Messenger that is suitable for Apple’s operating system OS X. A photo of the still unannounced software surfaced. It seems that the software is only being tested internally at Facebook for the time being.

TechCrunch has put the photo in question online, and claims to have received it from a source who has also seen the software itself. The image shows a Mac running an unreleased Facebook Messenger application. Although the image is not fully sharp, it appears to be an official app, which according to the source is used by a Facebook employee.

If the reports are correct, it is likely that Facebook is testing Messenger for OS X internally. The company declined to comment on the discovery to TechCrunch, making it unclear whether and when the software will be released.

Facebook previously released a version of Facebook Messenger for Windows, but support has since been discontinued. The company does offer a separate chat application on mobile phones. It is unclear whether a new version for Windows will be released at the same time as the version for OS X. Incidentally, web applications are already available for Mac and Windows.
