The successor to the classic Canon 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS telephoto zoom is in sight. A photo of the lens can be seen on the Japanese site Digicameinfo. In recent weeks, the rumors about the long-awaited successor to this lens have already increased strongly.

A lot of concrete information is not yet known, but based on the leaked image, we can already draw some tentative conclusions. For example, the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS II becomes a bit more compact than its predecessor and it gets a zoom ring instead of the push-pull concept that is now used. In terms of design, it also resembles the previously announced Canon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 L IS. The brightness of the lens is unchanged at f/4.5-5.6, but it is likely that the optical performance, image stabilization and autofocus have improved considerably.

The original 100-400mm lens dates back to 1999 and was one of the first Canon lenses with IS. The lens had been slated to be replaced for some time, as the old lens design limited image stabilization to just two stops and lacked weather sealing.

Nothing is known about the price and release date yet, but that will probably change soon.
