Photo of alleged Nvidia GTX 1080 cooler appears online
A photo has appeared on the Chinese Baidu that probably shows the cooler of the upcoming Nvidia GTX 1080. According to rumors, the new video card, which will use the Pascal GPU, will be announced at the end of May.
The photo only shows a cooler, which may be used for the reference design of the GTX 1080. The video card itself is not yet visible. At the end of March, photos of parts of the cooler already appeared online, with the text GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. The new photo seems to confirm the authenticity of the earlier images, although there is still a lot to be done since Nvidia is official. hasn’t announced anything yet.
Nvidia announced the Tesla P100 for use in servers and supercomputers at its GPU Technology Conference in early April. This card has the GP100 GPU, which is baked at 16nm. The same chip will find its way to consumer cards in the GeForce series in modified form.
Nvidia uses hbm2 memory for the Tesla P100 card, which will be launched in early 2017. Very likely that is not the case with the new GeForce cards. This new type of memory is not yet widely available and probably very expensive. According to rumors, the GTX 1080 will receive 8GB gddr5x memory, but it is also possible that Nvidia will still use gddr5 memory, just like with the current generation.
Nvidia is expected to announce its new GeForce cards at the end of May, just before the start of the Computex trade show in Taiwan. AMD will probably also show its graphics cards based on the Polaris GPU at that fair. This would concern the R9 490X and R9 490, also with gddr5 or gddr5x memory.
