Phison Electronics Partners with Chinese Memory Manufacturer YMTC

Phison Electronics has announced that all of its memory controllers are compatible with the memory chips from China’s Yangtze Memory Technology Company. The two companies also plan to jointly produce storage products.

Phison says its partnership with Wuhan-based YMTC will begin manufacturing consumer storage products, DigiTimes reports. Ultimately, the partnership will expand to include more high-end products, including enterprise storage.

Phison’s memory controllers now support the memory maker’s 64-layer 3d nand chips, which have been in mass production since 2019. Phison also supports YMTC’s 128-layer qlc memory chips. The latter chips are based on YMTC’s proprietary Xtacking 2.0 technology, and were announced in April.

YMTC is already collaborating with other Taiwanese tech companies, including Adata and Silicon Motion Technology. The latter company also produces memory controllers. According to DigiTimes, Tsinghua Unigroup, a majority-owned chip company by the Chinese state, has a controlling stake in YMTC.
