PhaseOne Announces 100MP Medium Format Camera

PhaseOne has announced a 100MP camera, the XF 100MP. The medium format camera contains a 100 megapixel CMOS sensor from Sony that is two and a half times the size of a 35mm sensor.

PhaseOne calls the XF 100MP the first ‘full-frame’ medium format CMOS camera, referring to the fact that it is a full 53.7 x 40.4mm medium format sensor and not a crop factor like the IQ250 from PhaseOne.

The XF 100MP can produce 14- and 16-bit color depth photos in TIF format, and PhaseOne claims the sensor, presumably at its native ISO 50 sensitivity, can capture as much as 15 stops of dynamic range. The light sensitivity ranges from ISO 50 to 12,800 and the longest possible shutter speed is 60 minutes.

The cmos technology enables a fast readout time of the sensor, which means that the camera is able to assess focus and composition via live view at 30fps. By tapping the screen twice, you can zoom in to 100% view in real time. In Vibration Delay and Mirror Up modes, the camera uses an electronic front-curtain shutter to prevent motion blur.

The asking price for the XF 100MP is $48,990, which is approximately $45,000 excluding VAT, but including a Schneider Kreuznach 80mm LS lens. There are a number of sample photos with a resolution of 100 megapixels on the manufacturer’s website.
