Peugeot wants to be the first Stellantis brand to integrate ChatGPT into the built-in voice assistant of its cars. The company confirmed this on Tuesday. Peugeot will initially start with a pilot in five countries and make the AI model more widely available from the second half of this year.

Parent company Stellantis says ChatGPT will be added to the i-Cockpit of ‘all Peugeot vehicles’, including the new E-3008-EV. This applies to both the manufacturer’s passenger cars and commercial vehicles, Stellantis reports in a press release. The company will initially start in Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain, writes Reuters news agency. The service will be rolled out more widely from the second half of this year.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT model is used in Peugeot vehicles for the built-in OK Peugeot voice assistant. Users can verbally ask that assistant questions, after which ChatGPT generates a response. According to Stellantis, the assistant can answer a variety of questions. For example, users can ask the voice assistant about points of interest in a city and then automatically set them in the car’s navigation system.

Automaker Volkswagen also recently said it would integrate ChatGPT into the voice assistant of its cars. That should happen by the middle of this year. Mercedes-Benz started a ChatGPT pilot in the United States last year. Peugeot will be the first Stellantis brand to use ChatGPT. Stellantis does not yet share plans for its other brands, which include Alfa Romeo, Citroën, Fiat and Opel.
