PEGI introduces symbol for in-app purchases on packaging games

PEGI, or Pan European Game Information, has created a symbol that publishers must put on game packaging if it contains in-app purchases. This way, parents know before the purchase that children can buy items in the game.

The symbol will appear on game packaging from the end of this year, PEGI writes. The warning is already there for digital games but was still missing on the physical release of games, the organization says. The symbol consists of a hand with a credit card.

PEGI has taken the step so that parents know before purchasing that children can buy items in the games and can therefore already make agreements about this. Virtually all parents monitor children’s in-game purchases, the organization says. In addition to the age classification, with which PEGI became known, packaging also contains symbols for things such as violence.
