PEGI to extend its European rating system to apps. The body in the EU responsible for age labels for games also wants to inform users of ‘small software applications’ about age limits.

PEGI, the organization that gives age ratings to games, is expanding its activities to apps. The agency made this known in a statement. With this, PEGI wants to bring the age rating system “to platforms where small software applications are sold,” i.e. app stores such as Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play.

The European age rating publisher is also looking at the possibility of expanding its business. For example, the organization wants to provide users with additional information about possible online risks of an app. PEGI lists privacy risks, data sharing and the use of geolocation as possible additions. European Commissioner Neelie Kroes leaves via twitter know how to be positive about PEGI’s plans.

The extension of the PEGI rating to the app stores follows new European guidelines to make the internet safer for children. Simon Little, Managing Director at PEGI said: “The PEGI rating for apps is an important step towards an EU-wide approach to apply age qualifications in different sectors.”
