Payment traffic via ABN Amro app Tikkie increased sharply in 2020: where it was 2.6 billion euros in 2019, so far it is 3.4 billion euros in 2020. The app was much more used to pay for groceries, the company says.

The increase in use to pay back advanced groceries is not entirely surprising, given that the former main application, splitting a catering bill, is not needed for much of this year, writes Trouw , who spoke with the bank. Other destinations for Tikkie that gained popularity this year were ‘puzzles’, ‘plants’ and ‘mouth masks’. The app now has six million users.

Tikkie became very popular shortly after its introduction in 2016. The app allows users to create and share payment requests via WhatsApp for example. These are then handled via iDeal and it is not necessary to be a customer of ABN Amro. Nowadays almost every bank has its own payment request system.
