‘Pay2win’ skins in Payday 2 now also available for free
Development studio Overkill has now also made the new ‘pay2win’ skins available for free. Players can now also get the drills needed to empower the skins as a drop after a successful mission.
In the recent Black Market Update, Overkill Studios introduced the so-called safes in co-op multiplayer shooter Payday 2. Players have a chance to get a safe delivered to their hideout when they complete a mission. The vaults contain skins for the various weapons in the game, and some of those skins improve the weapon’s performance. However, in order to open the vaults, players will need a drill, which they could only purchase with real money on the Steam Community. Players of the game were dissatisfied with the situation where people who spend more money on the game are more likely to get the gameplay benefits.
Overkill seems to have succumbed to the criticism this decision has generated. In the patch notes of the latest update for the game, you can read that after a successful mission, players can now be rewarded just as well with a drill as with a safe. This way players don’t have to spend money to open the vaults and the pay2win situation that many players complained about is basically solved. However, it is not yet clear how likely it is that a player will actually get a drill after a mission. In the update, Overkill also added the First World Bank mission from the first Payday to Payday 2.
