Pathé Theaters takes over film streaming service Pathé Thuis
Pathé Thuis has been taken over by Pathé Theatres. The latter founded the movie streaming service in 2011, but for many years only had a minority stake within the company. The two companies have worked together in recent years.
With the acquisition, Pathé wants to intensify the collaboration between the cinema company and the film streaming service. It seems that Pathé wants to persuade film distributors to acquire more films, which can be shown via the streaming service, for example. In addition, the company says that because of the corona period it has become increasingly important to be able to reach consumers at home.
Theaters founded Thuis in 2011, but since 2014 Thuis has operated as an independent company. Theaters did retain a minority stake in the company and the companies continued to organize activities together. Theaters now takes over shares in Thuis and says it will become a majority shareholder. Amounts and from whom the shares were acquired are not mentioned.
Pathé Thuis claims to have been used by more than 900,000 households in the past year, with 5 million films being rented out. The catalog now contains 4400 films. Customers cannot take out a subscription with the film streaming service, but only pay per film. The service is available as a smartphone, TV and console app.
