Patent shows foldable smart glasses from Samsung
Samsung seems to be working on smart glasses, which can be folded just like conventional glasses. This should not only make it easier to store the glasses, but also make repairs easier.
Samsung’s patent application was first discovered by Patently Apple, who also managed to recover sketches of the smart glasses. It is clear from the images that Samsung wants to make the glasses foldable in the same way that conventional glasses can be folded. Many smart glasses cannot be folded, making them difficult to store. The patent has been filed by Samsung with the US patent office USPTO.
The images also show that Samsung places a projector in one of the temples, which makes images presentable to the wearer through reflection through a built-in prism. By incorporating the technology into the temple, repair is also made easier: if something is broken, the entire pair of glasses would not have to be sent in for repair, but only the temple would be replaced.
It is unclear whether and when Samsung wants to release the smart glasses. Patented techniques are not always placed in commercially available products, although it is likely that Samsung is developing smart glasses. Rumors recently emerged from competitor Apple that they have discontinued the development of augmented reality glasses.
