Panasonic unveils two OLED TVs for 2018
Panasonic has unveiled two new OLED televisions. The FZW954 and FZW804 are both available in 55″ and 65″ versions and use Panasonic’s hcx video processor for better color reproduction.
Due to the hcx processor, the OLED televisions are able to use a functionality called Dynamic LUT. This concerns settings that ensure that the displayed image in terms of color reproduction and brightness corresponds to the intention of the creator of the content.
Normally this is static and is only set at the beginning of a movie, but the Dynamic LUT system allows the processor to choose a brightness and color rendering setting that best suits a scene via image analysis. This eliminates the need to determine LUT based on a color space used by the source.
Furthermore, Panasonic promises that by using the hcx chip, almost the entire dci color space can be displayed and that the color reproduction and the details in the difficult elements such as dark shadows or very bright light are shown very accurately. To prevent any unwanted light reflections, both models are equipped with a special filter that absorbs ambient light and is intended to prevent reflections.
Both models use HDR10+ as the HDR standard. The alternative HDR standard for displaying dynamic metadata, Dolby Vision, is not supported. Since August last year, Panasonic has been part of a partnership with Samsung, among others, to support and develop the hdr10+ standard.
The biggest difference between the two models is the presence of a soundbar. The FZW954 has an integrated soundbar in the foot that has been tuned by Panasonic’s in-house company Technics. This soundbar has a power of 80W, including a 40W subwoofer. The FZW804 has to make do with built-in speakers.
Panasonic reports that the FZW954 and FZW804 have the ‘fastest response times ever’, although no specific response time values are mentioned. Prices and availability dates are not yet known, but the models are likely to be officially released in February.
