Panasonic presents Lumix GH6 camera with 5.7k movie function and fan

Panasonic introduces the Lumix GH6, a microfour-thirds camera aimed at filmmakers. The device gets a new 25.2-megapixel sensor and can record videos in up to 5.7k resolution. In 4k, the device achieves up to 120 fps. The camera costs 2199 euros.

In 5.7k mode, the camera shoots videos with a resolution of 5728×3024 pixels, with a 17:9 ratio. The Panasonic Lumix GH6 does that with a maximum of 30fps in ProRes 422 HQ or ProRes 422 format. This results in videos with a bitrate of 1.9Gbit/s or 1.3Gbit/s.

In addition, the GH6 offers a variety of other options and bitrates, including 5.7k video at 60fps or 4k at 120fps in 10bit with 4:2:0 encoding. In full HD resolution, the frame rate goes up to 300fps for slow-motion videos. The device also has an anamorphic mode, which allows 5.8k recordings with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Panasonic provides the camera with a fan on the back to cool the sensor. The recording time is therefore unlimited. The new 25.2-megapixel sensor is equipped with five-axis image stabilization in the housing. Panasonic also uses a new system for this, which would be good for up to 7.5 stops of image stabilization. The stabilization mechanism is also used for a high-resolution photo mode. In it, the camera takes eight photos while the sensor is shifted slightly each time, to combine them into a 100-megapixel photo.

The 823 gram housing is dust and splash-proof and is equipped with a CFexpress Type B card slot and an SD card slot for UHS II V90 cards. The camera has a tiltable 3″ touchscreen and an OLED viewfinder with 3.68 million pixels.

Panasonic promises to add ProPres recording in 4k and FHD resolutions later with a firmware update. There should also be support for recording to an external SSD via USB. It is not yet known when such functionality will be added.

The Lumix GH6 is for sale from March for a suggested retail price of 2199 euros. A kit with a 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 lens costs 2499 euros and a kit with a 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 has a suggested retail price of 2799 euros.
