‘Panasonic, Leica, Sigma collaborate on full-frame L-mount camera system’

According to a rumor, Panasonic, Leica and Sigma have teamed up to create a new mirrorless camera system with a full-frame sensor. The system would use the existing Leica L mount.

According to 43rumors, the three companies are equal partners in the project and will all be releasing new cameras and lenses for the new system in the coming months. The Leica L mount is already used by the Leica SL Typ 601 full frame system camera, which came out in 2015.

Officially, the three companies have not yet announced anything about the collaboration, but the source says that it is completely certain of the information. Olympus is not named as a participant in the collaboration. That is somewhat striking, because Panasonic and Olympus have been releasing cameras and lenses for the micro four thirds system together for years. Panasonic and Leica have also been working together for some time, for example when releasing lenses for Panasonic’s current system cameras.

It is likely that Panasonic will announce a new full-frame camera on September 25, which, according to an earlier rumor, will be released in March 2019. That rumor also stated that this new camera would use a new lens mount designed by Panasonic. That probably isn’t true, now that it looks like the Leica L mount is being used.

It is not yet clear whether Sigma will also come up with a camera, or whether it will only make lenses for the system. The Japanese manufacturer is mainly known for its lenses, but also makes cameras. Until now, Sigma used its own SA mount.
