Panasonic has announced the GH5S, a variant of the existing GH5 that is even more optimized for making videos. The GH5S has a 10.2-megapixel sensor and can film with a resolution of 4096×2160 pixels at a maximum of 60fps.

The new 10.2-megapixel sensor offers slightly more pixels than is needed to shoot videos in 4k resolution and because the pixels are larger than the GH5 with 20.3 megapixel sensor, the image quality should improve in low light. The GH5S can shoot videos with an ISO value of up to 51,200. That is one stop higher than with the GH5.

In addition, the new sensor has a multi-aspect ratio, which means that the angle of view is the same when using aspect ratios of 4:3, 3:2,16:9 and 17:9. However, unlike the GH5, the new GH5S does not have a stabilized sensor.

Panasonic gives the GH5S the ability to record videos in 10bit with 4:2:2 sampling. The manufacturer has also installed its V-Log profile on the camera. That profile was available with the GH5 at an additional cost. At a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, the camera shoots at a speed of up to 240fps, for slow-motion recordings with a 10x delay.

The housing of the camera and hardware such as the 3.2″ touchscreen and the electronic viewfinder with refresh rate of 120Hz have not changed compared to the GH5. However, the sensitivity of the autofocus system has been improved, according to the manufacturer, which should now work up to light values of -5ev, instead of -4ev.

According to Panasonic, the GH5S is for sale from the end of January, for a suggested retail price of 2499 euros. The Panasonic GH5, which has been on the market since the beginning of last year, costs at the time of writing from 1769 euros.
