Owner Tile-trackers reports data breach in which customer data has been stolen
Tile owner Life360 reports that a hacker has obtained user customer data. This includes names, addresses and Tile identification numbers. Tile tracker location data, payment information and passwords have not been stolen, the company reports.
Life360 reports in a statement that hackers tried to extort the company after the data was stolen. The company said it received emails from an “unknown actor claiming to be in possession of Tile customer data.” After an investigation, Life360 discovered 'unauthorized access' to a Tile customer service platform. The company concludes that the leak did not affect other aspects of Tile. The admin credentials used to access the data have now been revoked.
The breach resulted in data such as names, addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers and identification numbers from Tile devices being stolen, the company said. No credit card numbers, passwords, Tile location data or government identification numbers were stolen, Life360 claims. This data was not retained in the customer service platform affected by the breach.
According to 404 Media, which first broke the story about the data breach, the hacker also gained access to certain Tile internal tools. This includes a tool used to process requests for location data from authorities, the hacker reported in a chat with that medium. The perpetrator provided some data and screenshots to 404 Media, after which the medium verified that data. Life360 did not immediately respond to the question of whether the hacker had the required access to actually request location data from users, the news website reported.
The hacker tells 404 Media that it used the login credentials of a former Tile employee to gain access to the customer service system. The perpetrator also says he has tools for transferring a Tile tracker to a new email address, creating admin users and sending push notifications to Tile users. The hacker says not to use this option.
