Organization behind wifi standard is working on standards for vr and ar
Standards organization IEEE has announced that it is working on standards for file formats and other elements of virtual reality and augmented reality. In the past, IEEE established the standards for Wi-Fi, among other things.
By setting standards, makers of hardware and software for augmented and virtual reality need to know where they stand in terms of what to support. Current standards are not sufficient, because not all devices and software platforms support them, says IEEE.
The organization is working with industry companies to determine which file formats will be included in the standard, and the project page shows other elements the IEEE works, such as identifying people and creating maps of virtual objects in the real world. . The project is called P2048.
The consultation should ultimately lead to a standard that can be followed throughout the industry. In total, more than two hundred companies and institutes are involved in the standardization, but it is unknown which exactly they are.
