Oracle announced the acquisition of DNS provider Dyn on Monday. The amount involved in the transaction has not been officially disclosed. With the purchase, Oracle wants to provide its own cloud platform with new services.

Although Oracle itself does not name a price, a former Fortune writer via Twitter know that it is at least $600 million, TechChrunch noted. According to Oracle, Dyn has about 3,500 customers, including companies like Netflix and Twitter. In an explanatory document, the company describes Dyn’s services as providing tools to monitor and optimize Internet services. Dyn’s products and services must still remain available after the acquisition.

Dyn was the target of a large-scale DDO attack in late October, which was later blamed on the Mirai botnet. Due to the attack, a number of major internet services were not or only poorly accessible, including Twitter, Reddit, Soudcloud and GitHub. The Mirai botnet, which consists largely of malware-infected IP cameras and digital video recorders, was capable of carrying out a 1.2Tbit/s attack, Dyn estimated in an analysis.

It is unclear whether the takeover was initiated before or after the DDOs attack. TechChrunch posed this question to Oracle, but the company declined to provide any information.
