‘OPPO will come with its own smartphone soc in 2024’

Leaker Ice Universe claims that Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO will introduce its own smartphone soc in 2024. The internal business division, which is responsible for the development of the chip, would have thousands of employees.

No details are known about the specifications of the socs Ice Universe doesn’t tell either which segment of the smartphone market OPPO wants to serve with this soc.

The leaker’s claims resemble earlier rumors from ITHome. This tech website also stated at the beginning of this year that OPPO is working on its own soc for smartphones. According to ITHome, OPPO would have the soc made at TSMC and that on a 6nm process. The Chinese manufacturer would first start with socs for cheaper smartphones. Later it would also like to compete with high-end socs. In 2021, the Asian Nikkei also reported that OPPO is working on its own chips. According to sources that the business newspaper was able to speak to at the time, these were high-end socs that would be produced on a TSMC 3nm process.

OPPO today uses chips from both Qualcomm and MediaTek in its devices. At the end of 2021, the company introduced its own neural processing unit, the MariSilicon X. That chip is in the Find X5 Pro and helps with image processing and AI tasks, among other things.
