Opera has released a new feature that summarizes web pages using ChatGPT. When users press the “Shorten” button, the chatbot automatically opens in the sidebar and summarizes the page content.

The ‘Shorten’ button should be available in the web browser ‘soon’, says an Opera spokesperson to The Verge. Little else is known about the function; for example, it is not yet clear for what kind of web pages it can be used exactly. In the demo showing Opera the summary function is used for a news article, after which the most important news facts are listed in a number of bullet points.

The Opera spokesperson tells The Verge that the company plans to integrate more “popular AI-generated services” into the sidebar in the future, although it is not yet clear what exactly this means.

In recent times, many companies are integrating AI functions into their services. Microsoft plans to provide Bing and Edge with ChatGPT functions, among others, although there are rumors that the company also wants to integrate the AI technology into its Office services. On Monday, Google came up with its own AI chatbot called Bard in response to ChatGPT. Chinese tech giant Alibaba is also working on an AI tool to compete with OpenAI’s bot.
