Opera GX lets users limit browser usage of CPU and RAM
Opera has announced the gamer-oriented browser Opera GX. Users can specify how much CPU power and RAM the browser should use, so that more computing power remains for video games, for example. The browser can be downloaded immediately as early access.
According to Opera, some gamers close their browsers when they start playing video games because the browser can draw too heavily on the computer, resulting in reduced game performance. According to the browser builder, this is no longer necessary with Opera GX. Via the GX Control panel, users can indicate how much processing power or ram the browser may use, so that the rest remains for a video game, for example. As a result, players can also run a web browser while gaming.
Opera gives the example of a computer with 8GB of ram, where the memory can be limited to 2GB, 4GB, 6GB or the full 8GB. With the processor, Opera GX works with percentages, in four steps from 25 percent to 100 percent. The processor and ram limits can be turned on or off separately. A hard limit can also be set for the RAM Limiter, whereby the limit may not be exceeded under any circumstances.
In addition to the GX Control, the browser gets Twitch integration. Users can log into Twitch via the browser’s sidebar and also receive notifications when a followed streamer starts streaming. The browser also comes with a GX Corner, where gaming related news and offers are presented. The look of the browser is also aimed at gamers, according to Opera, with “console-inspired animations and sound effects.” Those sound effects can also be turned off. If you also don’t like the standard black-and-red color scheme, you can choose from 16 million different colors to make the browser your own. The background can be customized as well. Finally, the browser works with Razer Chroma, allowing Razer devices to adjust their color to the browser’s chosen colors.
Opera GX retains all the features that the regular Opera browser also has. This means that this browser also has the Video Pop Out function, the baked-in ad blocker and a VPN on board. The Opera GX browser can be downloaded immediately as early access via the Opera site, the full version of the browser should be ready later this year.
