OpenIV mod tool for GTA V is available again
OpenIV, the mod tool for Grand Theft Auto V that was recently taken offline due to pressure from publisher Take-Two, is available again and can be downloaded. This is probably the result of a previous agreement between the mod developers and the creators of GTA V.
The download button for the modtool is now available again. The makers say on the website that the development of OpenIV will continue as normal. They also thank the community, which they described as a small, but very vocal and determined group. The modtool’s creators suggest that this community, through their pressure on Rockstar Games, has made OpenIV available again.
The makers of the modtool also say that OpenIV has never supported modifying GTA Online in the past and that it won’t in the future. The team behind OpenIV say they will continue their development work based on Rockstar’s modding policy. The developers also say that the “Liberty City in GTA V” mod will not be released as it would violate this Rockstar policy. The team says they are not happy about this, as the development of this mod was a big driver for their motivation to keep developing the OpenIV functionality.
On June 14, the OpenIV mod tool was taken offline after a writ from publisher Take-Two. The developers decided not to initiate legal proceedings and to comply with the request in the cease and desist letter. Users who then opened OpenIV were shown a message urging them to uninstall the software. A few days later, Rockstar Games announced that the mod tool was being taken offline, because it would make cheating easier in the multiplayer part. The developers have vehemently denied this. Also, Take Two pulled the paid cheat tool for GTAOnline from the web.
On June 24, it was announced that development of the modtool had resumed. It is likely that the mod developers and the game creators have come to an agreement. It is not entirely unexpected that the development of OpenIV has started again. Publisher Take-Two and developer Rockstar Games have emphasized from the outset that they have a problem with mods or cheats in the multiplay portion of GTA V, but in single player a modder can do whatever he wants.
The tool allows users to make adjustments to the single player part of the PC version of the games. For example, it is possible to replace 3D models of, for example, cars, or to make machinima videos. Also things like the physics and behavior of projectiles can be adjusted. The tool is much loved by the GTA V community.
