Open source project lets users play Oculus Rift exclusives on the Vive

The open source project Revive makes it possible to play games exclusively for the Oculus Rift on the HTC Vive. So far these have been the applications Lucky’s Tale and the Oculus Dreamdeck, but it is likely that more games will be supported.

The developer of the software states that it currently only works on Windows 8 and 10, and that support for Windows 7 is being worked on. It is also currently necessary to use an Xbox controller. To play Lucky’s Tale all you need to do is download a patch and run the game while SteamVR is running. To get Dreamdeck to work, you must use the ‘Revive Injector’, which is also available from the GitHub page.

The software works by “re-implementing functions from the Oculus runtime and translating them into OpenVR calls,” explains the maker. In addition, the own Revive dlls would contain the necessary code to bypass the code signing check with each application. It is also necessary to patch the desired application in order to load the Revive dlls.

It seems that in principle more Oculus games should be playable on the Vive. The maker, known as Reddit user CrossVR, explains on the site that he assumes that the technique can be applied to other games. He adds that games with an online functionality, such as Farlands, will not work. The software is currently still a proof of concept, which is in the alpha phase. In addition, it’s unclear how this technique compares to Oculus’ terms of use.

Several sites, including Ars Technica, have stated that the software would actually work. There are also users on Reddit who report the same thing.
